Yeah Yeah Yeahs on SNL

Yeah Yeah Yeahs performed last night on SNL and played new killer single "Zero" as well as old classic "Maps." The sounds wasn't superb on either, but they band sounded awesome nonetheless. Nick Zinner's shredding on "Maps" was awesome and I was glad to see Karen O. sporting the studded "KO" leather jacket from the "Zero" music video. Seeing them on SNL has only added to my anticipation for the band to release tour dates!!!! MP3's of the performance below for your iPod enjoyment.

Phoenix

My friend Eve is a HUGE Phoenix fan and counts their last album, "It's Never Been Like That," as one of her all-time favorites. Since our taste overlaps a lot, I've listened to that album countless time, but I've never really clicked with it. However, the first songs off of their upcoming album, "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix," are amazing. I love both of them completely, and they've inspired me to revisit "It's Never Been Like That," which I now have a newfound love for. Eve sent me this summary of the new tracks in an email:

you know how when you're listening to music, sometimes you want new stuff, but a lot of the time you want to hear something you know well? it gives you comfort. people like familiarity. well, i think this new phoenix has an immediate sense of familiarity. even though this is the first time i'm hearing these songs, i already know that i want to hear them over and over again.

I totally agree with her...these songs have been on repeat all week.

TVOTR on the SNL Sound

After TV on The Radio's (extremely) sub-par performance on SNL a few weeks ago, I wrote about how disappointed I was in whoever was in charge of sound that night. TVOTR had something to say as well.

I'm very puzzled.

TV on the Radio is a front-runner in the never ending "America's Radiohead" contest, and they released probably the best reviewed album of 2008 (the unbelievable Dear Science). They've also been known to put on mind-numbingly awesome live shows. But this weekend on Saturday Night Live, they sounded awful.

TVOTR played "Golden Age" and "Dancing Choose." The latter was better than the former, but both sounded sloppy and unbalanced. Apparently, SNL has a sketchy history with sound so I think I can chalk up the lackluster performance to poor sound technicians. Thank goodness. I had been really looking forward to their set and was pretty disappointed to hear them sound so muddy.
